Editorial standards & methodology

Sourcing

  • Every factual claim links to a primary source: judgments and orders on official court systems, regulator publications, official legislative texts, or vendor pages for vendor facts. Press coverage supplements; it never carries a claim alone.
  • Quotes are verbatim from the primary document, with pin citations where the source provides them. We never reconstruct, paraphrase-as-quote, or let an AI model produce a quotation.
  • Numbers are datestamped, traced to the original dataset and updated when the underlying record changes.

Tracker methodology

  • Inclusion rule: an incident enters the tracker when a court, tribunal or regulator has made a finding, order or public statement about AI misuse in a legal proceeding. We record their findings; we do not make our own.
  • Every entry is verified against the primary record before inclusion. Entries we cannot yet verify are labelled unverified visibly.
  • We track regulatory aftermath: referrals to and dispositions by bodies such as the SRA, SDT, BSB, law societies and state bars.
  • The tracker contains incidents we have verified. It is not a census of every AI-related filing worldwide. Corrections and submissions are welcome and credited where appropriate.

Regulation Tracker methodology

  • Inclusion rule: a document enters the register when an official body has published it and it governs or addresses AI use by lawyers, judges, court staff or litigants. Commentary, vendor guidance and law-firm policies are out of scope.
  • Each record links the official text, states who it applies to and what it requires, and carries a lastVerified date.
  • Every revision becomes a version entry with a note of what changed. Where possible we record an archive snapshot so the version can be checked independently.
  • We state what the rule says. Implementation advice belongs on LegalAI Space, an affiliated product (a Cognesio LLP product), and is disclosed as such.
  • The registry is free to reuse under CC BY 4.0: download JSON.

Legal tech tools methodology

  • The directory is a facts register, not a ranking or recommendation. No tool is scored, ordered by quality, or paid to be listed. Entries sit in alphabetical order within categories.
  • Every recorded fact is taken from the vendor's own published trust, privacy, terms or pricing pages, or from a named third party. Marketing claims are not facts unless they are concrete and checkable.
  • “Not disclosed” means we found no public statement. It does not mean the control is absent. Unknown stays unknown; nothing is inferred.
  • Accuracy evidence is labelled third-party or vendor. Incidents on the record link to the tracker case where the tool was identified in the judgment or order.
  • Entries with fewer than four sourced governance facts are marked provisional and excluded from search indexes until enriched. Every entry is re-verified on a rolling 90-day cycle and shows its verification date.
  • LegalAI Space is listed only with a permanent affiliated-product label as an affiliated product (a Cognesio LLP product). It is never scored, ranked, compared or counted in directory totals.
  • Vendors may send documentation or corrections through the report page or to corrections@safelegalai.com; changes are recorded, never negotiated.

Tool reviews

  • Scorecards assess only verifiable, public criteria: contractual terms, security documentation, sub-processor lists, data residency options, published accuracy evidence and named third-party benchmarks.
  • Vendors receive our findings and at least five business days to respond before publication.
  • LegalAI Space is an affiliated product (a Cognesio LLP product); it is never scored on this site.
  • “Not published” is reported as a finding, not silently skipped.

AI in our workflow

SafeLegalAI is produced with substantial AI assistance. Scheduled jobs sweep primary sources, compare changes, draft proposed YAML records and prepare article drafts. Incident sweeps run Tuesday and Friday at 05:00 UTC. The weekly edition runs Monday at 04:00 UTC and includes the regulation sweep, a tools re-verification batch, one deep article draft and the newsletter issue; monthly and quarterly jobs prepare EU AI Act and statistics reports.

The pipeline has gates before publication: schema validation, editorial validation, slop scan, live link check and a disclosure check. Articles get a separate fact-check session that re-fetches sources and returns a claim table. Every fail is fixed or cut before a draft can be marked ready for human review.

Cognesio LLP is the accountable publisher. The Cognesio LLP editorial team verifies quotes, case names, docket numbers, sanction amounts and statistics against primary sources, checks cited status, and signs off records and articles. AI-generated material is a draft input; the published page is an edited record.

What “last checked” means

“Checked” means a human re-opened every linked official document for that record on that date and confirmed the status shown on the page. “Updated” means the record content or classification changed.

Cadence is set by the pipeline: regulation changes are swept weekly; incidents are swept Tuesday and Friday; tools are re-verified weekly in batches on a rolling 90-day cycle. A last-checked date is not a promise that no later source has appeared.

What “provisional” means

To extend the regulatory map beyond the countries the editorial team has already checked, AI research compiles new country records from official sources under the same rules: a status is only set where a linked source supports it, otherwise it is “nothing found” or “not yet determined”. Until the Cognesio LLP editorial team has re-opened every source and confirmed each status, the record is marked provisional on the map, on its page and in the matrix, and its date reads “researched” rather than “checked”. Provisional statuses are leads for your own verification, not findings. Records leave the provisional state only after editorial sign-off.

Corrections

Confirmed errors are corrected with a dated note on the relevant page. Send corrections through the report page or to corrections@safelegalai.com.
