The first judge-specific generative AI order in the United States federal courts, issued by Judge Brantley Starr of the Northern District of Texas on 30 May 2023. Every attorney and self-represented litigant must certify either that no generative AI was used or that any AI-generated content was checked for accuracy by a human using print reporters or traditional databases.

What the document requires

  • Certificate required on the docket for every filer appearing before the judge.
  • Filers must attest that no portion of a filing was drafted by generative AI, or that all AI output was human-verified.
  • Verification must use print reporters or traditional legal databases.
  • Filings without the certificate may be struck; false certification exposes the filer to sanctions.
