A joint statement issued 6 December 2024 by the regulators of Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia on how the Legal Profession Uniform Law and conduct rules apply to AI. Solicitors must not enter confidential client information into public AI tools, must verify AI output, should disclose AI use to clients where appropriate, and remain responsible for their work.

What the document requires

  • Confidential client information must not be entered into public generative AI tools.
  • Practitioners must verify AI output and remain responsible for advice and documents.
  • Clients should be told about AI use where it is relevant to the engagement or to costs.
  • Firms should have policies and training for responsible AI use.
