The EU AI Act sets risk-based obligations for providers and deployers of AI systems, including law firms and legal tech vendors operating in the European Union. Prohibited practices and AI literacy duties applied from 2 February 2025, GPAI rules from 2 August 2025 and Article 50 transparency from 2 August 2026, with high-risk obligations now deferred to 2027 and 2028.

What the document requires
- Article 4 requires providers and deployers to ensure sufficient AI literacy among staff, applicable from 2 February 2025.
- Article 5 prohibited practices applied from 2 February 2025.
- General-purpose AI model obligations applied from 2 August 2025; Commission enforcement powers from 2 August 2026.
- Article 50 transparency obligations, including marking of synthetic content, applied from 2 August 2026.
- Annex III stand-alone high-risk obligations apply from 2 December 2027; Annex I product-embedded systems from 2 August 2028.
