The Philippines' new judicial conduct code, promulgated 11 November 2025, is one of the first anywhere to write artificial-intelligence limits into a code of judicial ethics rather than into guidance. Canon VI addresses competence, diligence and the ethical use of technology and artificial intelligence by judges.

What the document requires

  • Canon VI, Section 3: a judge shall personally write all decisions and resolutions.
  • Canon VI, Section 5: a judge may use AI tools only for research of relevant legal authorities, and must always verify the sources before citing them.
  • Canon VI, Section 6: ethical use of technology and artificial intelligence.
