A 44-page principle-based, technology-neutral guide covering lawyers, trainee lawyers and law-office staff. It classifies AI use into risk tiers, sets duties of human oversight, verification, professional secrecy, data minimisation and client information, and adds practical annexes: vendor criteria, model office-policy clauses and client-engagement wording. Advisory, reviewed periodically by TBB.

What the document requires
- Final responsibility rests with the lawyer: AI output is never a final legal opinion and must not be given to a client, court, authority or third party unchecked.
- Risk-based classification by data type, impact on the client, proximity to the legal outcome, whether the tool is open or closed, cross-border transfer risk and contractual safeguards: free assistive use, use subject to safeguards and where needed consent, and prohibited uses.
- No legislation, precedent, citation or fact from an AI tool may be filed with a court, arbitrator, mediator or administrative body without confirmation against official sources; hallucinated citations may be a grave breach of professional care, and errors discovered later must be corrected promptly.
- Non-anonymised client data, case and enforcement file content, evidence, special-category data, trade secrets and negotiation strategy must not be entered into public or contractually unprotected AI systems.
- Clients must be informed, and where needed give consent, whenever AI use touches their data, strategy or the outcome of the service; a client may ask that AI not be used on their file.
- Time saved by AI must not be billed as lawyer time, and AI or general software costs must not be passed on without prior agreement; AI use is not itself a ground to reduce the fee.
- Profiling, scoring or predicting individual judges' decisions is incompatible with professional practice, as are social scoring, manipulative techniques and emotion recognition.
- Marketing claims such as guaranteed results, predicting court outcomes or lawyer-free legal advice are barred, as is facilitating non-lawyers or systems that appear to give independent legal advice.
- Vendor criteria table covering data provenance, data location and cross-border transfer, a contractual undertaking that prompts and documents are not used for model training, security controls, transparency on error rates and a written data-processor agreement.
- AI literacy modules to be built into trainee education and in-service training, with a TBB-coordinated trainer pool and materials standard.
