Judicial Council of Ireland guidelines for judges, dated June 2024. Public GenAI tools may help with speeches and administrative or routine tasks but are not recommended for legal analysis or for research the judge cannot verify independently. Judges must verify output, keep private and confidential material out of chatbots, and remain responsible for decisions.

What the document requires

  • Public GenAI tools may assist with speeches and administrative or routine tasks, with careful oversight by the judge.
  • Not recommended for core judicial work: research to find new information the judge cannot verify independently, or legal analysis.
  • Judges must independently check and verify the accuracy of any information a GenAI tool provides.
  • Judges must not enter private, confidential or legally privileged information into a public AI chatbot.
  • Judges remain responsible for their decisions; GenAI cannot replace judicial judgment.
