The Estonian Bar Association's guide on artificial intelligence for advocates, published on 3 December 2024. It is addressed to advocates and law-office staff and sets out verification, competence and confidentiality expectations on the founding principle that the advocate, never the AI system, provides the legal service.

What the document requires

  • 'The attorney always provides legal services, not artificial intelligence' — AI output must be critically evaluated, its accuracy verified and its errors corrected by the advocate.
  • Advocates must maintain their own expertise and independent judgment rather than letting AI replace professional skill or erode critical thinking.
  • Sensitive client information should be entered only into systems whose security has been verified.
  • The guide warns against free public AI services, which may use entered information for product development or share it unexpectedly.
